Kenmare Shamrocks and Dr Crokes played out a thrilling draw in Round 6 of the McCarthy Insurance SFL Division 1 last Saturday evening in Fr. Breen Park, finishing level on 0-15 to 2-9.
In an entertaining contest, Dr Crokes made the stronger start and opened the scoring early on. Kenmare Shamrocks settled quickly, however, with Donal O’Sullivan and David Grembowiec getting the home side up and running. The sides traded scores in a competitive opening period, but a well-taken goal from Crokes’ Cian Mulcahy midway through the first half gave the visitors a valuable advantage.
To their credit, Kenmare Shamrocks responded well to that setback. David Grembowiec was prominent in attack, contributing key points from play, while Kevin O’Sullivan also added a fine score to keep the gap to a minimum. At the midway point of the half, Kenmare trailed by just a single point, 0-5 to 1-3, reflecting a strong and determined response.
The second half continued at a high tempo, with both sides exchanging scores throughout. Dr Crokes’ ability to find the net proved crucial, adding a second goal to maintain their edge despite consistent pressure from the home side.
Kenmare Shamrocks showed great resilience and composure, steadily working their way back into the game through accurate point-taking and strong work rate across the field. As the clock ticked towards full time, the home side pushed hard for a result, with the forwards continuing to convert chances under pressure.
The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time when Kevin O’Sullivan stepped up to slot over an excellent point from play, levelling the game at 0-15 to 2-9 and securing a well-earned draw for Kenmare Shamrocks. Dr Crokes did have a change to win it at the death but resolute defencing from the home side saw the game finish a draw.
Overall, this was a spirited and encouraging performance from Kenmare Shamrocks, who showed determination and character to battle back and earn a share of the spoils. There were strong individual displays throughout, combined with an impressive team effort that will give confidence going into the next round.
