Four point win for Senior footballers at home

Senior Football League – Division 1, Round 4
Kenmare Shamrocks vs Kilcummin

Kenmare Shamrocks welcomed Kilcummin to Fr. Breen Park for Round 4 of the County League, with both sides enjoying positive starts to their 2026 campaigns. Two late changes saw Dara O’Shea and David Hallissey come into the side in place of Tommy O’Sullivan (Atl) and Pearse O’Brien.

We made an ideal start to proceedings. Just three minutes in, Jack Tangney raised the green flag after a well-worked team move. Kilcummin responded through Paul O’Shea, but David Hallissey added a point soon after to keep Kenmare in control.

By the 20-minute mark, Kenmare had built up a five-point lead. Jack Tangney added his second point from play, followed by fine scores from David Grebowiec and Donal O’Sullivan, all coming from open play as the home side looked sharp in attack.

However, with the new rules proving to have a big impact on momentum, Kilcummin hit a purple patch. In the space of five minutes, they registered 1-03. Gary O’Leary struck for a goal in the 23rd minute, followed by an excellent point from Paul O’Shea. Had the scoreboard been working, it would have read Kenmare 1-05 to Kilcummin 1-06 after 24 minutes.

A brief stoppage for injury came at a good time for Kenmare, allowing them to regroup. On the resumption, David Grebowiec produced a moment of quality, cutting in from the left and rifling the ball past Brendan Kealy in the Kilcummin goal — a crucial response at a key stage.

Kenmare finished the half strongly, with the ever-reliable Tommy Cronin adding a point on the stroke of half-time to cap off a solid opening period.

Half Time

Kenmare Shamrocks 2-05

Kilcummin 1-05

Kenmare Shamrocks began the second half just as they had finished the first, on the front foot. They gained the upper hand around midfield and used possession well, while defensively they were disciplined and worked tirelessly for one another, making scoring opportunities hard to come by for Kilcummin.

Donal O’Sullivan was particularly influential, embracing an attacking role and opening the second-half scoring with a fine point from play. Kilcummin responded in kind, but Donal was again to the fore, adding another point to stretch Kenmare’s lead to four.

On 38 minutes, Shane O’Sullivan was introduced in place of the industrious David Hallissey. Shortly after, Donal O’Sullivan converted a free to keep the scoreboard ticking. This was followed by excellent scores from James McCarthy and Zack O’Shea, pushing Kenmare’s advantage out to seven points.

With fifteen minutes remaining, Paul O’Connor replaced David Grebowiec and made an immediate impact, getting his name on the scoresheet with a well-taken point. Kilcummin chipped away with a couple of points during this period, leaving the score at 2-11 to 1-08, but James McCarthy responded with another fine effort to restore the seven-point cushion.

Further changes saw Liam O’Sullivan introduced for Zack O’Shea, while Tommy O’Sullivan (Atlantic) replaced David Ciuciu with six minutes of normal time remaining.

Jack Tangney extended his tally to 1-02 with a well-taken free, and at that stage it looked like the result was beyond doubt. However, a late defensive lapse allowed Kilcummin in for a goal with just a minute of normal time remaining, setting up a tense finish. There was a hint of a square ball about it, but the referee ruled in favour.

Five minutes of additional time followed, with both sides exchanging points (Donal O’Sullivan fisted point), but Kenmare held firm to see out the game and secure a deserved four-point victory.

Well done to all the players and management. Next up is an away fixture against Beaufort next Sunday at 3pm.
